Understanding PS5 lights and sounds: blue light, white light and beeping

Your PS5 is flashing blue, suddenly shows only a white light with no picture, or beeps when you switch it on — and you’re wondering what it’s trying to tell you. The console talks to you in lights and sounds, but hardly anyone has read the manual for it. Here’s the translation: which signal is harmless, which points to a fault, and what a repair costs in Vienna.

The key points first

  • Blue light flashing, no picture: This is the Blue Light of Death — the console never gets through startup. Repair from EUR 89.
  • White light, no picture: The PS5 is running but outputs no image — usually HDMI or graphics. From EUR 89.
  • A single beep: Completely normal — the confirmation when you press power or eject.
  • Beeps and shuts off: A protective shutdown, often the power supply or overheating. Diagnosis and repair from EUR 89.
  • Steady white light with a picture: All good, the console is simply on.

What colour is the PS5 light in normal operation?

Normally the PS5 lights up blue for a moment at startup and switches to a steady white after two to three seconds. Blue means the console is booting. White means it’s on and running. When it goes into rest mode the light turns orange. That’s the entire normal light language of the PS5 — anything else is a deviation worth taking seriously.

One thing to understand: the same LED shows both „all good“ and „something’s wrong“. So it’s not the colour alone that matters, but whether the light gets stuck, flashes or pulses — and whether a picture appears with it.

PS5 flashing blue and won’t start — what does it mean?

If the blue light flashes and no picture appears, the console is stuck in startup. This is called the Blue Light of Death (BLOD). The blue boot signal should switch to white within a few seconds — if it doesn’t, the start sequence has a problem. Causes range from an unstable power supply through overheating to a fault on the mainboard.

Before sending it in, one attempt is worth it: unplug the power cable, wait two minutes, plug it back in. Then start safe mode (hold the power button for seven seconds until the second beep) and choose „rebuild database“. If the blue flashing remains, it’s a hardware case. We explain the full range of causes and the repair on the PS5 BLOD repair page — fixed price from EUR 89.

PS5 white light but no picture — the second common case

White light with no picture means the console is already running but the image isn’t reaching the TV. That’s what makes it tricky: the PS5 says „I’m on“, yet the TV stays black. The fault isn’t in the start, it’s on the output side — the path of the video signal from the graphics chip through the HDMI encoder to the HDMI port.

Unlike the blue case, this is often the kinder variant. First try a different HDMI cable, a different TV input and a direct connection to the TV without an AV receiver. If that doesn’t help, the HDMI area is usually involved. More on the PS5 white light repair page. If the port is the cause, it runs as a PS5 HDMI repair from EUR 89.

What do the PS5 beeps mean?

A single short beep when you press the power or eject button is normal — it’s the console’s acoustic confirmation, not a fault. Only a string of tones, a beep followed by a shutdown, or a beep without a successful start is a warning sign.

The most common problem case: the PS5 beeps and then switches off again. That’s a protective shutdown — the console begins to start, detects a problem and stops itself. Usually an unstable power supply or overheating is behind it. The exact diagnosis and the repair are on the PS5 beeps and shuts off page.

One thing many people look for: you can turn the normal confirmation tone down under Settings, Sound, Beep Volume. It can’t be fully disabled on purpose, because the same buzzer also issues warnings.

PS5 making weird noises — fan, disc drive or buzzer?

Loud or grinding noises during operation almost always come from the fan — dust, a worn bearing or dried-out liquid metal. It gets audible especially under load while gaming. The fix is a deep clean with a fan check and fresh liquid metal, see PS5 overheating and fan.

A clicking or rattling sound when loading or reading a disc belongs to the disc drive, not the fan. And a true electronic beep is yet another case — see above. Three different noises, three different causes.

What does the repair cost per signal?

Prices depend on the fault, not the model — PS5, PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro are the same. Here’s the overview:

Signal Likely cause Repair
Blue light flashing, no picture Boot/power, HDMI, firmware from EUR 89
White light, no picture HDMI port or encoder, GPU from EUR 89
Beeps and shuts off Power supply or overheating from EUR 89, PSU approx. EUR 99
Loud fan noise Dust, bearing, liquid metal cleaning from EUR 59
No standby light Power supply PSU EUR 99

The diagnostic check costs EUR 25 and is fully waived once you place a repair order. An honest note up front — not every signal is an expensive case. Plenty of BLOD and beeping cases resolve with a firmware reset in safe mode, and with the white light it’s sometimes just the HDMI cable. We tell you that too, even when no repair turns out to be needed.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn’t my PS5’s blue light turn white?
The blue boot signal should switch to white within two to three seconds. If it stays blue or flashes, the start is stuck — that’s the Blue Light of Death. Causes are the power supply, overheating, firmware or a mainboard fault. Try safe mode and a power reset first, otherwise repair from EUR 89.
Is a white light on the PS5 bad?
No, a steady white light with a normal picture means the console is on and running. It’s only a problem with white light and no picture, or a flashing or pulsing white light — then the image isn’t reaching the TV, usually due to HDMI or graphics.
Is a beep at PS5 startup normal?
A single short beep is normal — the console confirms the power button and disc insertion. Only a string of several tones, a beep with a shutdown, or a beep without a start is a reason to have the device checked.
Can I turn off the PS5 beep completely?
You can lower the volume of the confirmation tone under Settings, Sound, Beep Volume. It can’t be fully disabled on purpose because the same buzzer also issues warnings. A beep string with a shutdown can’t be fixed this way anyway — that’s hardware.
Do the prices also apply to PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro?
Yes. Prices depend on the fault, not the model. PS5, PS5 Slim, PS5 Slim Digital and PS5 Pro are the same — only the component positions on the board differ. Tell us your model so we can have the right part ready.

Short and honest: lights and sounds are your PS5’s language — once you can read them, you immediately know whether it’s harmless or not.
