Typical display faults on the Xiaomi Mi 8
After an impact a dark, ink-like blotch spreads from the point of impact across the panel. Typical for damaged AMOLED displays – the organic light-emitting layers leak internally. The blotch keeps growing the longer the device is used.
Around the notch at the top edge the touchscreen no longer responds to input, while the rest of the display still works. The digitiser traces run right around the notch – a crack in this area locally interrupts touch detection.
The Mi 8 was the first Xiaomi flagship with Gorilla Glass 5 on the front and back. The protection withstands a lot, but it is not unbreakable. Drop heights over a metre or hard edges leave splinters that feel sharp and quickly get worse.
Vertical lines in green, purple or pink tones across the AMOLED display point to an internal panel break. Often the problem appears even though the front glass still looks intact from the outside. A software reset cannot fix this – the panel is mechanically damaged.

Why AMOLED displays on the Mi 8 are especially demanding
AMOLED panels produce true black by switching off individual pixels completely – that looks fantastic, but makes the panel more vulnerable to mechanical damage than IPS LCDs. Once broken internally, the liquid organic light-emitting material leaks out and forms the typical black ink blotches. A pixel cannot be repaired locally – the entire panel has to be replaced.
