The Pixel 6a came onto the market in July 2022 – as the first a-model with real water protection. The predecessors Pixel 5a and Pixel 4a had no IP protection, the Pixel 6a brought IP67. That is relevant if the speaker fails after splash water: unlike the older a-models, the 6a has a seal that keeps moisture out for years. Over time, however, this material ages – heat, drop damage and mechanical strain make the rubber seal porous. Both devices have stereo sound with two separate modules. The main difference is in the housing: Pixel 6 with glass at the back, Pixel 6a with plastic. In terms of sound, the Pixel 6 is a little fuller, because the larger speaker chamber in the 6.4-inch housing offers more volume. The 6.1-inch Pixel 6a sounds a bit drier, but the volume is easily enough for YouTube and calls. In repair terms the 6a is simpler – that makes the replacement cheaper than on its bigger brother.

Try it for 24 hours at room temperature. If the speaker still sounds muffled or distorted afterwards, the membrane is damaged – water permanently attacks the fine speaker membranes. Water damage is diagnosed separately (25 EUR, waived on order).
