What to expect

Mi 9T display with a colour cast – why this happens
On the Xiaomi Mi 9T colour casts usually occur for two reasons. The first is the natural ageing of the AMOLED panel: the organic LEDs for the colours red, green and blue age at different rates. After several years of intensive use green pixels glow longer than blue pixels, for example, and the image slowly tips into a greenish tone. The effect is most pronounced on white surfaces – the pure white of an empty WhatsApp or Chrome page suddenly looks cold and greenish-shifted.
The second cause is damage to the display driver IC after an impact. Even if the glass looks intact on the outside, the driver at the bottom panel edge can crack internally or a solder joint can loosen. The control of the colour voltages is then no longer correct – the image gets a colour cast that stretches across the whole surface, sometimes combined with vertical stripes. Software updates or colour profiles do not help in either case – on the Mi 9T the panel has to be replaced as a unit.
The in-display fingerprint sensor after the panel replacement
The Mi 9T fingerprint sensor works optically through the AMOLED: a brief light pulse from the panel illuminates the finger, and a sensor under the glass photographs the reflection pattern. After a panel replacement the optical characteristic changes slightly – stored fingerprints therefore have to be deleted once and registered anew. Afterwards the sensor recognises the finger reliably again, often even faster than with an aged panel with a colour cast.
