In 2019 the Pixel 4 was the first in the Pixel line to get a true dual camera system — a 12.2 MP main camera plus a 16 MP tele module with 2x optical zoom. These two modules work separately. If one fails, the other does not automatically fail with it. These are the defects we see most often:
- Camera app crashes on opening — the screen stays black or the app closes after a few seconds
- Tele camera (2x zoom) shows a black image — the main camera still works, the zoom mode shows nothing
- Main camera takes hazy or blurry photos — autofocus pumps or hangs on close-ups
- Front camera does not respond — selfies and video calls fail, Face Unlock may also be affected
- Photos show stripes, pixel errors or pink discolouration — internal image sensor defect
- Camera module damaged after a fall — visible cracks in the camera bumper or a shifted lens
On the Pixel 4 the Soli radar (Motion Sense) sits spatially separate from the camera module. A camera defect therefore does not automatically mean that Motion Sense or Face Unlock sensors are affected too — we check that separately during the diagnosis.

Module swap with tele protection We open the Pixel 4 from the glass back, release the IP68 seal and replace exactly the defective module. The tele module was fitted for the first time in the Pixel 4 and needs particular care during removal and refitting — we work with a microscope and an antistatic setup.

Image test and IP68 sealing Before return we test the main camera, tele zoom and front camera with reference shots, check autofocus and exposure. The IP68 seal is re-set so that the splash-water protection is retained. Only then does the device go back.
Is the Pixel 4 camera repair worth it?
The Pixel 4 dates from 2019 — six years old at the time of a typical repair. The question is fair: is spending EUR 59 still worth it, or straight to a new device? The numbers speak clearly for repair. A Pixel 8a costs around EUR 549 new. Even a used Pixel 6 is EUR 200–250. For EUR 59 you fully reactivate the original device — the data stays on it, the apps stay set up, you do not have to learn anything new.
There is also an argument that is often overlooked: the Pixel 4 is the first Pixel with a true tele zoom. The Pixel 5 has no tele any more (Google cut it), and only the Pixel 6 Pro brought it back. Anyone who wants 2x optical zoom in a compact 5.7" device has a little collector's item in the Pixel 4. Repairing instead of replacing is the right decision here.
Pixel 4 specific — why the diagnosis is so important
The Pixel 4 has a quirk: the Soli radar, Face Unlock sensors and front camera all sit in the wide forehead bar at the top. In a frontal fall more than just the camera can be affected. Pixel 4 vs. Pixel 4 XL camera — are there differences?
No. The Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL have identical camera hardware: the same 12.2 MP main camera, the same 16 MP tele module, the same 8 MP front camera. The image processing is identical too. The only difference is in the display and battery, not in the camera. The repair price and module parts are therefore the same for both devices.
Does the 2x tele zoom work fully again after the repair?
Yes. We fit tele modules that match the original in focal length and sensor size. After fitting we test the 2x zoom with reference images for sharpness, colour accuracy and autofocus speed. The optical zoom then works like on day one — not a digital substitute but a real tele.
Is the IP68 protection retained after the camera swap?
Yes, if the repair is carried out professionally. We re-set the original seals on the frame and the glass back — this retains the splash-water protection to IP68. Important: after every opening the protection is only as good as the newly set seal. We use exclusively original sealing material.
How long does the Pixel 4 camera repair take?
The module swap itself takes 1 to 2 hours, depending on whether just the front module or the complete dual module has to be replaced. Including pickup and return in Vienna you are usually done the same day — by post across Austria one to two working days.
What does the diagnostic cost if I do not commission the repair?
The diagnostic costs 25 EUR. If you then book the camera repair, this fee is fully waived — you then only pay the EUR 59 for the repair. Should you decide after the diagnosis not to have the Pixel 4 repaired, the 25 EUR is charged separately.
Will my photos and app data be lost?
No. During the camera module swap only hardware is moved — the internal storage stays untouched. Photos, videos, app data, settings, Google account, everything stays on it. Even so we recommend: a backup via Google Photos or Google One before any repair. Better safe than sorry.
Can I drop the Pixel 4 off in person?
We have no open customer access — a walk-in is not possible. Instead we offer two routes: pickup service in Vienna (we come to you) or send-in by post. Both options are insured and transparent.
How does the pickup service in Vienna work?
You book an appointment online and give your address in Vienna. We come at the agreed time, pick up the Pixel 4, repair it in our workshop and bring it back. You do not have to leave your home. The service is included in the repair price.
How do I send the Pixel 4 in from the rest of Austria?
You pack the device well cushioned in a sturdy box and send it to us as an insured parcel. On receipt we check, repair and send it back insured. Shipping costs are borne by the customer — the repair itself still costs EUR 59 fixed price.
What warranty do you give on the camera repair?
A 6-month warranty on the fitted module and our fitting work. If a fault caused by our work occurs in this time — the module fails, image quality drops out, the plug contact comes loose — we fix it free of charge. Mechanical damage from new falls is not covered.
Do you fit original Pixel 4 modules or aftermarket parts?
We fit tested modules that match the original in sensor, focal length and image processing. Genuine Google service parts are practically no longer available for the Pixel 4 in Europe — Google has not supplied service parts for this model for years. Our modules deliver the full Pixel-typical image quality on a Pixel 4.
What if another problem appears after the module swap?
In that case we check the plug connection, flex cable and mainboard again. If the fault still lies in our repair, we rework it free of charge — within the 6-month warranty. If there is a new, independent problem (e.g. a new fall), you get a transparent estimate in advance.
Can water damage make a camera repair impossible?
Not necessarily. We first check whether only the module is affected or whether there is corrosion on the mainboard. With superficial water contact a module swap plus cleaning is often enough. Is the repair worth it — or rather a new Pixel?
Clearly repair. A Pixel 8a costs around EUR 549 new, repairing a Pixel 4 costs EUR 59. You save around EUR 490 and keep your device with all its data. The Pixel 4 is also the first Pixel with a true 2x tele zoom — the Pixel 5 no longer had it. For anyone who values that it is a little collector's item. EUR 59 is well invested for it.
