The Pixel 5a has an aluminium unibody construction — one piece of metal into which all components are built. This feels premium, but has a catch: dents cannot be "knocked out" like on old phones, because the metal is milled very thin and sits right next to the battery. We replace the entire aluminium unibody and transfer all internal components — display, battery, mainboard, camera — onto the new housing. The Pixel 5a launched in August 2021 with a 4,680 mAh battery — the largest battery Google has ever built into a Pixel. For EUR 109 you get the premium look back, instead of spending EUR 549 on a new Pixel 8a, which, by the way, only has a 4,492 mAh battery — so less runtime than your 5a.

Pixel 5a aluminium repair – costs and background
The Pixel 5a was a special case in Google's 2021 lineup: while the Pixel 5 still had a bio-resin housing with wireless charging, Google went the opposite way with the 5a — aluminium unibody, more robust, cheaper to manufacture, but without Qi charging. This construction looks stylish and survives considerably more drops than a glass back — but if the aluminium does take a dent, it gets trickier than a glass-back replacement. The whole unibody has to come out, every internal component has to be transferred. That is elaborate handwork and the reason why the Pixel 5a back repair is EUR 109 — higher than for pure glass-back models.
Compared to the direct predecessor Pixel 5, the 5a has a larger battery (4,680 instead of 4,080 mAh), but IP67 instead of IP68 — so water-protected for 30 minutes at 1 m depth instead of 1.5 m. During the housing replacement we cleanly re-establish the IP67 seal, so your Pixel 5a is protected against splash water even after the repair.
What happens to battery, display and camera during the replacement?
These components stay yours — we fit them into the new aluminium housing. The 6.34" OLED, the 4,680 mAh battery and the dual camera are carefully transferred. If during disassembly it turns out that the battery has already aged considerably after several years, we mention it beforehand — a parallel battery replacement in the same appointment saves time. How much does the Pixel 5a back repair cost?
The complete housing replacement on the Pixel 5a costs EUR 109 fixed price — including the aluminium unibody, transfer of all internal components, a freshly set IP67 seal and a 6-month warranty. The 25 EUR diagnostic is waived as soon as you order the repair.
Why does the replacement cost more than on models with a glass back?
On the Pixel 5a the entire aluminium unibody is replaced, not just a back glass. Battery, display, mainboard, cameras and antennas have to be released individually from the old housing and fitted into the new one. That is considerably more elaborate than detaching a pure back glass — hence EUR 109 instead of EUR 89.
Pixel 5 vs. Pixel 5a housing — what is the difference?
The Pixel 5 has a bio-resin housing (bio-resin with an aluminium core) and supports wireless charging. The Pixel 5a is pure aluminium unibody without Qi charging. This also results in the repair difference: on the 5 the bio-resin cover can be replaced separately, on the 5a the whole aluminium housing has to come out.
Pixel 5a vs. Pixel 5a 5G — different devices?
It is the same device — Google officially calls it "Pixel 5a (5G)", because 5G functionality is built in as standard. Older marketing texts and some retailers abbreviate the name differently. For the repair it doesn't matter which spelling is on your invoice.
Does the Pixel 5a have wireless charging?
No. Unlike the Pixel 5, the 5a has no Qi wireless charging. Charging is done exclusively via USB-C cable. Dropping the charging coil under the back was one of the reasons Google could offer the 5a more cheaply.
How long does the Pixel 5a housing replacement take?
2–3 hours in the workshop. With pickup in Vienna you often get your Pixel 5a back the same day. With send-in from the provinces, expect 2–3 working days total including shipping.
Is the IP67 protection retained after the repair?
Yes — we lay all sealing rings around the camera, USB-C port and buttons fresh and check the fit before bonding. The IP67 protection (30 minutes in 1 m of fresh water) thus stays functional. We still don't give a warranty on water damage — that's industry standard.
Is my data retained during the housing replacement?
Yes, completely. The mainboard and storage are moved from the old housing to the new one — photos, apps, accounts, messages stay unchanged. You don't have to set anything up anew or restore anything.
Can the Pixel 5a be dropped off with you for the replacement?
Reparo does not run a walk-in workshop. The two ways to us: pickup service in Vienna (we come to you) or send-in by post from anywhere in Austria. You book online and we coordinate the rest.
How does the Vienna pickup service for my Pixel 5a work?

What warranty is there on the housing replacement?
6-month warranty on the aluminium housing, the seals and our work. Should, for example, a button come loose or a seal detach, you bring the device back to us and we fix it free of charge.
Does Reparo fit original Google housings or aftermarket parts?
We fit precisely matching aluminium unibody housings that are made to the original template and match the Pixel 5a in shape, colour and button layout. Original spare parts from Google are no longer available for older models like the 5a — but the quality of the parts we use is so good that no visual or functional difference remains.
Is the repair worth it, or better to buy a new Pixel?
EUR 109 for a complete repair instead of EUR 549 for a new Pixel 8a — and your Pixel 5a even has a larger battery than the 8a. As long as the display and battery are still okay, the housing replacement is almost always worth it. If the device additionally has display or battery problems, we discuss it openly beforehand.
What if the Pixel 5a also has water damage?
If the device has had contact with water and the back is damaged at the same time, we check both together. Diagnostic check 25 EUR waived on repair order. The IP67 protection only applied with an intact seal — after a drop with a dent, the seal has often already become leaky beforehand.
