As long as the display is intact, the battery still delivers decent runtime and the aluminium housing has no cracks, a 59-euro port replacement is by far the cheapest way to keep the Pixel 5a alive. My Pixel 5a was briefly in water – could that have destroyed the port?
Yes, even though the Pixel 5a is IP67-certified (so briefly submergible in fresh water), corrosion can form on the pins of the USB-C port after years or with salt water contact. This is one of the most common triggers for loose contacts. During the diagnostic we check the port under the microscope for traces of corrosion.
Is repair worth it or should I buy a new Pixel 8a directly?
At a new price of around EUR 549 for the Pixel 8a, EUR 59 for a repaired port is the significantly cheaper choice. The 4,680 mAh battery of the 5a in particular is still strong, the aluminium housing holds up and IP67 is still very usable today. If the display and battery of the 5a are still fine, there is hardly an argument against the repair.
Does the Pixel 5a continue to work in a limited way during the repair?
Unlike newer models, the Pixel 5a does not support wireless charging – so power comes in exclusively via USB-C. If the port is completely dead, the device unfortunately can no longer be operated until the repair. That's exactly why we aim for 1–2 hour express speed as soon as the device reaches us.
Is the Pixel 5a charging port identical to the one on the Pixel 5a 5G?
