Fan, touchpad, storage: the HP repairs beside the four classics
A loud, hot HP is usually dust rather than a defect
We clean an HP cooling system as soon as the fan runs audibly all the time, the underside gets hot and performance collapses after a few minutes. What sits in the fins is a felt of dust you cannot see from outside. We open the machine, clear the cooler, renew the thermal paste and measure the temperature under load afterwards. On the models that actually have a fan this starts at €59.
Trying to tame the noise in software runs into a wall: on HP the fan curve lives in the firmware and reacts to measured temperatures. A blocked cooler reports honestly high numbers, so every tool does exactly the right thing, only loudly. What you can shift is the power profile in the Windows energy settings, and that moves the threshold without removing a single speck of dust.
When the touchpad does nothing, check the switch first
If the surface ignores you, the pointer jumps or the click no longer travels, the cause is usually a loosened ribbon cable or a failed module. If the pad visibly bulges upward, the battery underneath has swollen and has to come out first, otherwise the bulge returns within weeks. Before any of that, try the free version. On the top row of your HP there is a key showing a crossed-out rectangle; that key together with Fn switches the touchpad off and on again. Many models add a second route, a tiny dot in the upper left corner of the pad that lights up briefly when you double-tap it quickly. Adapter or socket? Five minutes of testing settles it
When an HP stops charging, two parts are under suspicion and you can separate them without tools. Check whether the brick gets hand-warm after a few minutes and whether the small charging light on the case comes on. If both stay cold and dark, the adapter is usually finished. If power only arrives while you hold the plug at an angle and stops the moment you let go, the socket has play and needs renewing from €89.
The third case is the awkward one: the adapter works, the light is on, and the percentage still does not move. Then either the cell has reached the end of its cycles or the charging electronics on the mainboard refuse to release current. The little light beside the socket is talking to you
HP reports the charging state through one LED next to the connector, and the three states mean different things. Steady amber means the machine is charging normally, which is not a fault. One case shows up again and again: the laptop charges while switched off and stops as soon as it is running. Then the adapter cannot cover operation and charging at the same time. Hinge cracked, picture flickering, dock silent
A failing hinge announces itself: the lid clicks when you open it, one corner of the bezel lifts slightly, and eventually the screen sits crooked. The cause is the plastic threaded posts the hinge screws into. While only that mount is torn, the job stays small, from €89. Wait until the hinge pushes the bezel apart from inside and crushes the cable in there, and the whole display unit joins the bill.
A dark or flickering picture has three possible sources. Flicker exactly when the lid moves means the cable in the hinge channel has cracked. A picture that stays equally dim at every brightness but is still readable in raking light means the backlight. Fully black while the fans run calls for the external monitor test, which is two minutes of work and saves a wrong diagnosis.
Storage, graphics and the wireless card
A machine that takes minutes to boot rarely lacks processing power; it has a tired hard disk. We fit an SSD from €169, move your Windows and data across on request and hand back the old drive. The graphics chip is a different story: on nearly every HP notebook it is soldered to the mainboard, so swapping it like a desktop card is simply not a design that exists, and stripes on screen far more often come from the panel or its cable.
The wireless and Bluetooth card, by contrast, sits in its own M.2 slot and is one of the few parts that can be changed on its own. Not every machine is called Pavilion, Envy or ProBook. HP sells a whole family plainly as HP Laptop 15 or HP Laptop 17, for example the 17-ca1 or the 17-cn, so owners hunt in vain for a series page. The charging light beside the socket is blinking. What does that mean?
Steady amber simply means the battery is charging and is not a fault at all. White means it is full. My HP fan is loud and the case runs hot. What helps?
A clean and fresh thermal paste, in the vast majority of cases. After two or three years the fins behind the fan are packed with dust, the heat cannot escape and the machine slows itself down deliberately to survive. We strip the cooling, clear it, repaste and measure the temperature under load before and after so you can see the difference. That starts at €59 on the models that have a fan at all.
The touchpad on my HP does nothing. Is it broken?
Not necessarily, because the pad can be switched off. Look along the top row for a key with a crossed-out rectangle and press it together with Fn, or double-tap the tiny dot in the upper left corner of the pad quickly. Can the graphics chip in an HP notebook be replaced?
