Typical camera problems on the Pixel 3
The Pixel 3 camera is robustly built — and yet there are clear fault patterns that occur more frequently after five to six years of use. If one of them applies, we know what is wrong:
- Main camera no longer focuses, images stay blurry — even in daylight
- Camera app crashes right on opening or simply hangs
- Black image despite a working app — the sensor no longer delivers a signal
- Front camera (selfie) only shows a black image or doesn't react at all

Loosen the display and remove the camera module On the Pixel 3 the main camera sits under the 5.5" OLED — we carefully loosen the display, document the original seal and remove the defective module without pressure on the mainboard. For the front camera the earpiece area is enough.

Module swap and autofocus calibration The tested replacement module goes in, the autofocus is calibrated and the image sensor synchronised with the software. HDR+ and all photo modes then undergo a live test.

IP68 seal renewal and function test Before refitting the display we replace the surrounding IP68 seal — otherwise the splash protection would be gone. After that 20 test shots run under different lighting and you get your Pixel 3 back with sample images.
Is the camera repair on the Pixel 3 still worth it?
The Pixel 3 is from 2018 — and that is exactly the point. Back then Google fitted the best smartphone camera of the year, carried by HDR+ and its own computational photography. Even current mid-range devices don't reliably reach the photo quality when the light gets difficult.

Important to know: HDR+ and all photo algorithms are software-based — they run on the image chip and are not determined by the camera module. What does the Pixel 3 camera repair cost?
The Pixel 3 camera repair costs EUR 59 as a flat price at our shop. This includes the main or front camera module, the full fitting, autofocus calibration and a function test. There are no hidden surcharges — not even for loosening the display during the main camera swap.
How long does the camera swap on the Pixel 3 take?
Pure workshop time is one to two hours. If you send the device in, the postal route is added — usually your Pixel 3 is back with you within one to two working days. With the pickup service in Vienna it is even faster.
Do HDR+ and computational photography stay after the camera swap?
Yes, fully. HDR+ and computational photography are purely software functions — they run on the image processing chip and are not stored in the camera module. After the swap, night sight, HDR+ and even astrophotography work just like before the fault.
Can only the front camera or the main camera be swapped individually?
Yes, both modules can be replaced separately. If only the 8 MP front camera (selfie/video call) has failed, we fit only that one — the main camera stays untouched. The other way round just the same. You still pay the flat price of EUR 59 — regardless of which of the two modules.
Is the camera swap worth it on the 5+ year old Pixel 3?
The Pixel 3 had the best smartphone camera of the year in 2018 — and that is exactly the photo quality you get back. EUR 59 repair stands against EUR 549 for buying a new Pixel 8a. As long as the battery, display and mainboard are still ok, the swap is clearly economically sensible.
What does the diagnosis on the Pixel 3 cost?
The diagnostic check costs 25 EUR and is waived in full as soon as you place the repair order. So you pay either 25 EUR for the check alone or EUR 59 for the complete repair — never both side by side.
Will data, photos or apps be lost during the camera swap?
No. The camera swap touches neither the storage nor the mainboard data area. Your photos, apps, logins and settings stay fully intact. Nevertheless a Google backup before sending in is a smart precaution.
Does the IP68 protection stay after the camera repair?
Yes, as long as we do the job. We always replace the surrounding IP68 seal when refitting the display — original seals lose their function the first time they are loosened. With a new seal the splash protection is restored.
Original or aftermarket module?
We only fit camera modules that we have checked for image quality beforehand. On the Pixel 3 original-spec modules are the rule — only that way the sharpness tuning with Google's image processing is preserved. Cheap aftermarket parts often deliver softer images; those don't get fitted at our shop.
Can I drop the Pixel 3 off in person?
We have no open customer access. You can either send your Pixel 3 in by post (Austria-wide, return included) or use our pickup service in Vienna — we come directly to your home or office.
How does the pickup service in Vienna work?
You book a pickup time via the appointment form, we come by and take the Pixel 3 with us. The repair takes place in the workshop, and we bring the device back to you on the same or next working day. One leg is included.
What if the camera still has problems after the swap?
Within the six-month warranty you come back free of charge and we check the connector, software and module again. In the vast majority of cases it is a connector matter that is sorted in 15 minutes — you pay nothing for it.
Does the repair help with water damage to the Pixel 3 camera?
With direct water ingress under the camera module (e.g. salt water, longer immersion) the module swap alone is often not enough — corrosion on the connector and mainboard has to be stopped first. In that case we do a diagnosis in advance and discuss whether the EUR 59 price holds or whether more is needed.
Can I have the battery or display on the Pixel 3 repaired at the same time?
Yes, and that is even clever. When loosening the display for the main camera the device is open anyway — a battery or display swap in parallel costs less labour and therefore less overall. Let us know at the appointment, we put together a package offer.
What sets the Pixel 3 camera repair apart from the Pixel 4 or Pixel 5?
The Pixel 3 still has a single main camera (12.2 MP) plus a dual front camera. The Pixel 4 and Pixel 5 have a dual main camera with an additional telephoto or wide-angle sensor — different modules, different build, different price. The Pixel 3 is therefore the cheapest of the three repairs.
