Is a housing swap on the Pixel 3a still worth it?
The Pixel 3a came to market in May 2019 for around 399 € – as an affordable mid-range alternative with a Pixel camera. Pixel 3a housing repair in Vienna – what you should know
The Pixel 3a was Google's attempt to bundle the good qualities of the Pixel range into a more affordable device. Instead of a glass sandwich there is a one-piece polycarbonate housing – frame and back are fused together. This build saves weight and money, but has a catch: when the housing is damaged, you cannot simply swap "only the back glass". The complete housing module has to come out. The housing swap is therefore more involved than a classic back-cover swap on glass devices – and that is exactly what the fixed price of 89 € reflects.
You should not rely on water protection with the Pixel 3a: the device has no official IP certification. Splash water cannot harm it, but deep water or prolonged moisture are off-limits. The housing swap does not change that – we do not build in more protection than was intended from the factory. The same applies to wireless charging: the Pixel 3a has no Qi coil, wireless charging was never part of the 3a's feature set.
How does the housing swap differ from a glass back swap?
On Pixel models with a glass back – such as the Pixel 7a or Pixel 6 – only the glass plate is loosened and replaced with a new one. With the Pixel 3a that is not possible: frame, back and buttons form a firmly bonded unit. We remove the internals (display unit, mainboard, battery, camera, charging port) from the old housing and transfer everything into the new housing module. If you still use the device daily and the battery, display and camera are fine, yes. For 89 € you get a visually fresh Pixel 3a back. If a replacement is due anyway or the device has several faults, switching to a used Pixel 6a or 7a is often worth it.
Will my Pixel 3a get wireless charging afterwards?
No – the Pixel 3a never had wireless charging from the factory. It lacks the Qi coil inside, which is a hardware matter and not a question of the back. Even after the housing swap the Pixel 3a charges exclusively by cable via USB-C.
Will the Pixel 3a get water protection through the new housing?
No. The Pixel 3a has no IP certification from the factory and the housing swap does not change that. You get a visually like-new shell, but no additional protection against splash water or submersion.
