The standard Galaxy S21 (January 2021) was Samsung’s most divisive S model of the decade. Two big changes: the curved screen of the S20 was replaced with a flat 6.2 inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X — a move owners broadly liked — and the glass back of every previous flagship S was replaced with plastic, a cost-cut Samsung never explained well and that reviewers panned on day one. The flagship internals stayed: Exynos 2100 in Austria (Snapdragon 888 in the US), 120 Hz adaptive AMOLED, 4,000 mAh, IP68, 5G, three cameras. Add the new iPhone-style Contour Cut camera island that wraps into the aluminium frame and you have the design that defined every Galaxy S since. Five years on, the plastic back has aged surprisingly well: fewer cracked backs than the S21+’s glass.
The flat 6.2 inch panel and the redesign
The S21 was the first standard S model in years to ship a flat panel. From a repair perspective that drops cost meaningfully: original Samsung-quality flat AMOLED EUR 199, tested aftermarket flat OLED EUR 149 — both with full 120 Hz behaviour after fitting. Roughly EUR 30–50 less than the curved S20 equivalent panel. The flat panel also pairs cleanly with the Contour Cut frame design.
The plastic back — cost-cut that ages well
Samsung shipped the S21 with a polycarbonate back as a cost-cutting move that reviewers called premium-feel betrayal. The S22 returned to glass the following year. Five years of repair data tell a different story: the plastic flexes on drops where the S21+ glass shatters. We see meaningfully fewer cracked backs on the S21 than on the S21+. The 4,000 mAh cell and the Exynos 2100 heat
Smallest cell in the S21 family. The Exynos 2100 in Austria runs hotter than the Snapdragon 888 in the US, which means thermal cycling has been harder on the battery over five years. Most S21 cells now sit below 80 % Battery health. A EUR 79 swap restores the original capacity and the original 25 W Super Fast Charging behaviour.

No. S Pen support was an S21 Ultra exclusive in the S21 family — the standard S21 does not have the Wacom digitiser layer under the screen.
Is the S21 still worth repairing in 2026?
For most owners yes. Exynos 2100 still handles all modern apps, the plastic body has aged well, and a EUR 149 screen or EUR 79 battery is well below the replacement cost of an equivalent new phone. Used S21 trades around EUR 160–220.
Does the S21 still receive software updates?
Major Android support ended with Android 14 / One UI 6.1. Quarterly security updates still arrive in 2026. Hardware repair does not affect update eligibility.
What is the difference between the S21 and S21+ for repair?
Same camera trio and SoC. Plus has 6.7 vs 6.2 inch panel, 4,800 vs 4,000 mAh, and glass vs plastic back. Screen EUR 20 less on standard (EUR 149 vs 169), back same EUR 79 but plastic is more forgiving in workshop handling.
What warranty do I get on an S21 repair?
6 months on every part and on labour, valid Austria-wide. Battery cell receives an extended 12-month warranty. Drops or water damage after the repair are not covered.
Will wireless charging work after a plastic-back swap?
Yes. The Qi coil position is identical between plastic and glass variants — we re-position and verify 15 W Fast Wireless Charging plus PowerShare reverse-wireless before closing.
