How do I know I actually have the PS4 Slim and not the launch model or Pro?
The Slim is the CUH-2000 — the smallest, lightest PS4, with a fully rounded matte casing and no angled glossy top strip. The original launch PS4 (CUH-1000/1100/1200) is bigger with that two-tone angled top. The Pro (CUH-7000) is the tallest, three-layer box with two USB ports plus an extra one at the back and an optical output. If you can read the model number on the sticker underneath, CUH-2xxx confirms the Slim.
Why does my PS4 Slim fan get so loud and shut the console down?
The Slim packs its single fan and heatsink into a tighter shell than the launch PS4, so dust chokes the cooling fins faster. When heat can’t escape, the system ramps the fan to maximum and eventually shuts down to protect the APU. A €79 service — full disassembly, heatsink clean, fresh thermal paste — fixes the noise and the shutdowns in the vast majority of cases. It isn’t broken — Sony removed the optical S/PDIF digital audio output entirely from the CUH-2000 Slim. The launch PS4 had it on the rear panel, but the Slim does not. If you relied on optical for a soundbar or wireless headset base, you’ll need to use HDMI audio or the controller’s 3.5mm headset jack instead. There’s no port to repair here because it never existed on the Slim.
